Camillus, N.Y. — The newest location from Empire CBD is now open in Camillus and the local chain is planning a big expansion in the months ahead.
The Camillus store is in its soft opening phase, with a grand opening planned for this weekend. The chain has a total of three locations, including other sites on State Fair Boulevard in Syracuse and South Bay Road in Cicero.
The Camillus store replaces the Empire location in Elbridge, which closed in April. The new site is at 4310 W. Genesee St., just west of the Fairmount Fair plaza.
The stores all carry a range of CBD products, including edibles, topical products, items applied under the tongue and products for vaping, said Yardley Burgess, who started Empire CBD.
He said he decided to launch the business after CBD helped him manage a variety of his own health problems that began to emerge while he was in the military.
CBD, which stands for cannabidiol, is a chemical compound that can be extracted from cannabis plants. It’s different from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.
CBD, which does not produce the high that marijuana does, has been exploding in popularity in recent years after the federal government eased rules on farming hemp, which can be a source of CBD. New York has been encouraging hemp cultivation as well.
CBD has been used to create a host of products, including lotions, soaps, oils and more. It has been repeatedly touted for its health benefits by advocates, who argue it can help with seizures, chronic pain, anxiety, depression and sleep.
David and Mary Beth Colbert are running Empire’s Camillus location. They said they will also be involved in a significant expansion of the company that is in the planning stages now.
The chain plans to have five stores open by the end of 2019 and then open at least one every two months in 2020, Burgess said. Initially, Empire will continue expanding in the Syracuse area, but eventually expects to open in other Upstate New York markets as well.
The Colberts have known Burgess since he and Mary Beth met at a craft show about a year ago. Mary Beth helped Burgess design the sign for his first store and both she and David became more interested in the business over time.
Mary Beth has worked as a medical technologist and David is a financial adviser who has also owned several small businesses. He has served as president of the Greater Camillus Chamber of Commerce in the past.
