New CBD dispensary in Johnson City looking to educate the public on health benefits

Even though marijuana is not legal in all 50 states, the use of Cannabidiol (CBD) and hemp based products, which also come from the cannabis plant, is legal.

CBD dispensaries are popping up across the Tri-Cities region, the latest is “Franny’s Farmacy” which opened in Johnson City in March.

The shop is working to educate the public on what they describe as the vast benefits of using CBD products.

First, they want the public to understand that even though the products are derived from the cannabis plant, it is not marijuana.

All of their products are either CBD isolates, which only contain the medicinal properties of CBD, or have the legal limit of THC, which is what gives users a slightly euphoric “buzz.”

Shop owners explained their products provide natural remedies to chronic pain, seizures, arthritis, insomia, anxiety and much more.

From lotions, balms, salves, vapes and even edible options, the goal is pain relief that does not come in the shape of a pill.

“CBD is a natural option, people have a lot of pharmaceutical options that doctors have put them on that may have side effects that they are not happy with. So, they are looking for something more natural that can give them similar relief,” says Derrek Pugh, the bud specialst at Franny’s Farmacy.

For the Farmacy, even shortly after opening they say the demand for these products is high.

“You are only going to get the best quality and it is all local,” says co-owner Dawn Wagner.

The shop believes their natural remedies can be a life changer for people dealing with chronic pain and other ailments. But, they say many are hung up on a stigma.

That is something Wagner wants to change.

“If people did realize the benefits, the medicinal benefits that have helped so many people around the country, I think it would push more people to come in and say, ‘What is this all about and how can it help me?’” says Wagner.

Their goal is to shed some light on how CBD products can help people in our region.

“That is the reason we are here, is to take that stigma away. This is legal, it is not going to make you high. You are going to have the medicinal purpose that the product can give you,” says Wagner.

While CBD products are not currrently regulated by the FDA, Wagner says she hopes to inspire legislative change to introduce regulations industry-wide. Even without the regulations, Wagner says the products have been heavily researched and are safe.

An important distinction to make is between CBD and THC. THC is the property in marijuana that gives users a “high” but is legal for consumption in products at a rate under .3 percent.

All products at the Farmacy are either CBD isolates, meaning they contain no THC, or have the legal limit of THC. They want to warn users there is a possibility of THC showing up in a drug test, even at the low-dose, legal limit.

For people concerned about this, they recommend their CBD isolate products, which pose no risk.

The store is located at 3116 Oakland Ave. in Johnson City, Tenn.
